The Kelowna Art Gallery will be hosting a special display over the next few weeks as Halifax-based artist Sarah Maloney brings her unique vision to the Okanagan.

According to a press release, Maloney’s “Collapse” will explore the notion of the traditional domestic sphere of women, the Victorian pastime of embroidery and the female connection to flowers.

The centrepiece of this show will be a real chaise lounge, which Maloney terms a fainting couch – it has been adorned with bronze tulips sprouting from the innards of the couch with the heads bowed modestly.

A black and white catalogue accompanies the show with curatorial text written by Kelowna Art Gallery curator, Liz Wylie.

An opening reception for this exhibition will take place on Friday from 7-9 p.m. and Maloney will be on hand to talk about her pieces.

Another speaking event featuring six artists, including Maloney, will take place at the Kelowna Art Gallery on Jan. 26 from 1-3 p.m. The topic of discussion will be issues facing artists working outside of major urban centres of cultural production.

Maloney holds degrees from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the University of Windsor and has been teaching classes at NSCAD since 2002. Her work will be on display from Jan. 26 – March 31.
