This raw exclusive video was sent to us by Konstantin Seroshtan. The officer can be seen in the back of the ambulance.
An on-duty RCMP officer was injured after his patrol vehicle was struck by a suspected impaired driver last night. The cruiser was destroyed by the collision.
Witnesses say the cop car was T-boned by a truck at the intersection of Richter Street and Cadder Avenue. The incident took place around 12:30 a.m.
The RCMP member was conducting routine patrols when his vehicle was struck at the intersection.
The suspect was apparently driving his Dodge pickup at a high rate of speed, failed to stop for a red light and impacted the police vehicle on the front passenger door and quarter panel causing extensive damages.
Konstantin Seroshtan was home at the time, heard a loud bang and saw the two vehicles at the intersection.
"The driver of the truck tried to leave the scene but the condition of the truck didn't allow him to get away. A few seconds later the police officer got out of the cruiser and started walking toward the truck. His head was bleeding," says Seroshtan.
"Within 20 seconds more police officers arrived. I counted 11 police vehicles, two ambulances and two fire trucks at the scene."
Investigators found the driver, a 27 year old Kelowna man, to be exhibiting signs of impairment and he was transported to the Kelowna detachment where he provided breath samples in excess of the legal limit.
Both the RCMP officer and the suspect were taken to hospital with apparent non-life threatening injuries.
The truck's front-end was completely crushed. The force of the impact moved both vehicles about 15 metres from the intersection.
The truck belonged to a landscaping company.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Kelowna man faces potential charges of Impaired Driving, Drive While Over .08, and Dangerous Driving Causing Bodily Harm. He has been released on a Promise to Appear in March.
The Kelowna RCMP asks that anyone with any information about the crash to please call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
