MADD and Kelowna RCMP have announced a new program designed to encourage motorists to report dangerous or suspected impaired drivers to 911 before potentially deadly crashes occur.

“People aren’t calling until it’s too late,” said Constable Kris Clark, who spoke at the press conference Wednesday morning.

“We see dangerous driving every day and we want it to stop.”

According to Carol Fazekas, President of MADD in the central Okanagan, “the focus of the campaign is to remind Canadians that impaired driving is indeed an emergency situation and that calling 911 is appropriate.”

Campaign 911 has already been implemented in 70 communities across the country and has resulted in a significant increase in charges and license suspensions in those areas.

Road signs encouraging safe driving will go up in strategic locations around town.
