Driver with no licence flees roadblock

A 32-year-old woman faces a long list of charges after fleeing the scene of a road check Saturday night.

RCMP members were conducting a roadside check on Sexsmith Road near Valley Road about 9 p.m. when the unidentified woman refused to provide officers with a driver's licence and then sped away.

Cst. Kris Clark says police followed the woman with emergency equipment engaged, travelling at about the posted speed limit.

"The driver managed to evade two different stops by driving into the ditch on Sexsmith Road and driving over the median on Sexsmith at Highway 97 while turning left onto the highway," says Clark.

"A spike belt was deployed on Highway 97 North at Beaver Lake Road causing all four tires on the Mazda to deflate and effectively disabling the vehicle."

He says the woman refused to get out of the vehicle once it was disabled forcing police to remove her.

Clark says police were forced to smash the passenger side window in order to unlock the vehicle and remove the woman.

She remains in police custody.

Along with receiving a violation ticket for driving without a licence, Clark says the woman also faces criminal charges of Flight From Police and Obstruction.

Clark says he was not able to determine whether the woman had her licence suspended or whether she never has obtained one.

He says alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

She is expected to remain in custody until her next court appearance Thursday.
