Grey Cup party honours late founder
For 12 years Dr. Barry Urness hosted what had become one of the most popular and anticipated Grey Cup parties in Kelowna.
Illness prevented him from carrying on the last two years.
Dr. Urness passed away earlier this year from cancer.
Now, a men's group at Trinity Baptist Church are resurrecting it.
Dan Oliver, spokesman for 'Man Up' says his group is bringing it back in Dr. Urness' memory.
"We thought this was a no brainer to bring back to life," says Oliver.
"He did it for 12 years running and it got quite a following. I think at the end close to 300 people would show up."
Oliver says the Barry Urness Memorial Grey Cup Party will begin at 2:30 this Sunday and run until the game is over.
The event is free by donation, however, Oliver says since seating is limited, people planning on attending should go to www.trinitybaptist.net and print off a ticket.
Snacks and munchies will be provided at each table and chili and hot dogs will be available about 4:30.
There will not be alcohol served so Oliver says the entire family is invited to join in the festivities of the 100th Grey Cup between Toronto and Calgary.
Former Okanagan Sun coaches Lawrence Nagy, Pete McCall and Jay Christensen as well as Pat Kennedy will be on hand to provide insight and analysis before, during and after the game.
Oliver says Sunday's event couldn't have happened without 'Man Up.'
"It's essentially encouraging guys in the community to get involved. Whether it has a church or Christian affiliation it doesn't matter, we just want guys to get engaged. Get out there and do something," says Oliver.
