A volunteer was killed picking up garbage along Shannon Lake road back in 2011.

Everyday around the world almost 4000 people are killed and many are injured while on the road.

In order to remember those lost in a traffic related accidents 'The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims' was started by RoadPeace.

Created in 1993, it has been observed and promoted worldwide NGOs, including the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims (FEVR) and its associated organizations.

The day is to remember the many killed and injured on the world's roads, together with their families and many others also affected.

In Canada the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims  is a day set aside to remember those killed or seriously injured on our country's roads, often in avoidable collisions, and those left to deal with the sudden and unexpected loss of people they love.

Locally, on an average year Kelowna sees approximately 8,300 crashes where over 2000 people are injured according to the ICBC Community Snapshot.

As a way to bring awareness to the issue of preventability of motor vehicle related injuries Paul Hergott, a local personal injury lawyer funds a campaign titled 'One Crash is Too Many'.

Through the campaign, Hergott requested that Mayor Walter Gray proclaim November 21, 2012, as “Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims".

The event will be held for the first time in the Okanagan, on Nov. 21 at Orchard Park Shopping Mall at 5 p.m.

Hergott says the event is intended to be a focal point for those who have suffered the effects of road traffic injuries/deaths.

Members of the Kelowna Fire Department, West Kelowna Fire Department, and RCMP will be on hand in support of the event.
