Poor poppy sales

With only one more day to go before Remembrance Day, the Kelowna branch of the Royal Canadian Legion says poppy sales have failed to keep pace with last year’s numbers.

“It’s not really a concern,” says Poppy Chairman Ronald LeRoy.

“We just have to budget a little bit tighter, that’s all.”

He adds they are thankful for whatever they get, but concedes that numbers so far are down when compared to 2011, which was a banner year.

The Royal Canadian Legion begins their poppy drive each year on the last Friday of October and it goes until Nov. 10.

“I would say maybe after the fourth or fifth day that they’re out, then they’re more noticeable and more people want them,” says LeRoy.

“The campaign and all the organizing takes a few hundred people – some people do it once and some people have done it a dozen times – so they’re the people that we really appreciate.”

Remembrance Day ceremonies in Kelowna will take place at the City Park Cenotaph with a parade of participating organizations and the Colour Party marching from Kerry Park to the Cenotaph at approximately 10:25 a.m.

A period of social remembrance will also be held in the Parkinson Recreation Centre between 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
