The mother of slain West Kelowna teen Ashley Hyatt says she is anxious yet relieved that her daughter's accused killer will be tried later this month.

After facing the accused already in preliminary hearings a year ago, Charrie Hyatt will watch as a court decides the fate of an 18-year-old West Kelowna woman accused of stabbing Ashley Hyatt to death following a house party in Peachland in June 2010.

Jury selection is expected to begin Oct. 22 or 23, with the trial commencing on Oct. 24.

“Your anger kind of turns into relief that you’re finally here,” Charrie Hyatt said outside BC Supreme Court in Kelowna Monday. “I’m anxious and excited because your family gets some closure and she (Ashley) gets to rest.”

Charrie Hyatt as well as several family members and friends of Ashley attended court Monday for a preliminary hearing.

The identity of the accused, who was 16 at the time of the stabbing, as well as the details of the preliminary hearings cannot be released due to a publication ban.

The accused was granted bail shortly after the stabbing incident, which occurred June 3, 2010. She faces charges of second degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault causing bodily harm.

Hyatt would have been 19 Sept. 4. She is survived by her mother and father, Greg, as well as four siblings.
