OFF again is on again
The much maligned Okanagan Film Festival (OFF) International has found a new home.
The festival, which was turned down by the Paramount Theatre and its parent company, Landmark Cinemas, will now take place at the new theatre at UBC Okanagan.
Festival organizer, Jeremy Heynen, says operators of Theatre 26 on the UBCO campus contacted his former partner who in turn contacted him.
Heynen says he will get his first look at the theatre Tuesday evening to determine what he needs to pull off the festival.
OFF made headlines last week when it was discovered a documentary titled 'Donkey Love,' which chronicles the practice of men having sex with donkey's in Colombia, was going to be shown.
At that time, for various reasons, the Landmark Cinema refused to host the festival and Heynen began receiving death threats.
Heynen says most of those threats were from people who believed he endorsed bestiality.
He says it was amazing how people reacted once he stated his position that he did not support the practice and neither did the documentary.
The filmmakers stumbled upon the practice while in Colombia shooting a documentary on the country.
They interviewed teachers, priests and officials with the Colombian embassy for the documentary.
Heynen says the film will be screened as scheduled at 11 p.m. Saturday night.
In a poll conducted by Castanet, 53 per cent of respondents believed the documentary should not be shown while 25 per cent were in favour.
A further 22 per cent didn't care.
