Marching against violence

Take back the night - Sept. 20, 2012
About 120 men, women, and children converged at Stuart Park in Kelowna Thursday night to “take back the night” in honour of victimized women.
The crowd marched their way through the downtown core after 7 p.m. carrying placards and chanting slogans in solidarity with female victims of sexual violence, an annual event carried out by the Elizabeth Fry Society, a women’s empowerment group.
“I think it was our best take back night we’ve had,” said Allie Grey, resource centre facilitator for the Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society.
The event was co-hosted by the Okanagan Roller Derby Association (OKRD).
“If you’ve ever been for a roller derby bout, you see that roller derby women are fearless on the track,” said Aimee Thompson, agency co-ordinator for the society. “It’s that spirit of courage, strength, and teamwork that we want our community to experience at Take Back the Night, so to me, the partnership is a natural. ”
“We are students, professionals, moms, and friends who encourage women of all backgrounds and skill levels in a supportive environment to become the strong, athletic, fearless roller derby players you see on the track,” said Christina Ferreira (Moxie Crue), OKRD league president.
“We are thankful for the sisterhood we have found in roller derby, and are proud to support the Elizabeth Fry Society to extend our objective of women’s empowerment to our community. ”
The society next plans to hold a candlelight vigil in memory of women murdered by men Dec. 6.
