Locked up for a good cause
Two local media personalities will be behind bars until donations set them free.
Klaudia Ceglarz of CHBC Global News and Christy Farrell of 103.9 The Juice will be locked up in a kennel at the Kelowna SPCA to help raise money for the shelter.
Kristin Mazuren, fundraising coordinator for the Kelowna Branch says many communities across the province are participating in their own Kennel Lock-in to raise money for their shelters.
"The notion is that of a 'jail and bail' where the participants will be seeking donations to get out of the kennel.”
The Lock-In has been promoted to the public for a couple of weeks now but the ante just went up when a local business owner jumped on board.
Alex Draper owner of Shut Out Sports Collectibles and Westside Warriors Corporate Sales person has decided he too will go directly to jail in the hopes of helping to raise money for the shelter. Draper has donated a framed 20 X 16 picture signed by Vancouver Canucks Alex Burrows to encourage the public to donate. It is a minimum $5 donation to get your name in the draw.
The Kennel Lock-in will take place Friday from 9 to 11 a.m., and the prisoners will be busy on their phones calling friends and family to help get them out of the kennel.
Mazuren encourages people to come to the shelter, to meet the staff and volunteers as well as all of the amazing animals looking for forever homes.
The Kennel Lock-in is part of the hype leading up to the annual Scotiabank and BCSPCA Paws for a Cause…Walk for the Animals, held on September 9 at the City Park north field.
This year’s activities will include a one kilometre and three kilometre walk, the Dog’s Got Talent contest, a Kids Zone with games, face-painting and bounce house and your chance to Guess What’s in the Big Steel Box to win a prize worth over $500.
The Scotiabank and BCSPCA Paws for a Cause is the largest fundraiser for the organization. The BCSPCA receives no government funding and is reliant on support from the community.
To start fundraising, sign up online at www.spca.bc.ca/walk or visit the branch at 3785 Casorso Road to pick up your pledge form .
All funds raised in Kelowna will stay in the community to help our local, abused and unwanted animals.
