Demolition underway at KGH

More construction work -- or, in this case deconstruction at Kelowna General Hospital.

Construction crews have begun demolition of the Pandosy Building at KGH.

Interior Health spokesman, Cam McAlpine says demolition work on the one story portion of the building should be completed by the end of the week.

"They are going to use that space for laydown and staging for future demolition. As you can probably tell there is not a whole lot of space on the site right now," says McAlpine.

"They are doing preparation for the demolition of the rest of the building now. That will start happening probably in October. The building will be completely down at the end of the year."

The Pandosy Building was constructed in 1940, replacing the original 19 bed hospital on the same site.

It was replaced earlier this year by the Centennial Tower.

McAlpine says once the Pandosy Building is demolished site work will begin on the new Interior Heart and Surgical Centre, which will be built on the same site.

The $169M facility is expected to open in mid 2015.
