Body found off Hot Sands Beach
A tourist from Calgary made a shocking discovery Monday afternoon while snorkelling off Hot Sands Beach.
Steve Brown tells Castanet he discovered the man, who appears to be in his 20's, 40 to 50 feet off shore in about four feet of water.
"He was face down, arms crossed," recalls Brown.
"I grabbed his arm and I could feel it was very stiff so I knew he had passed away."
Brown says he called for help and people on shore called 911.
"A couple of them came in right away and helped me out. We all agreed he was gone so we didn't try to resuscitate him," added Brown.
"We floated him towards shore, turned him over, put him on his back and left him on the shoreline."
Brown says the man was wearing only a bathing suit.
"They (police) just think maybe he drowned. It was tragic for him. He may have passed away this morning or yesterday," says Brown.
He says it was fairly shallow where he found the body but gets steep very quickly.
"That's what the police officer was saying. They have to be careful of those quick drop-offs. A lot of people don't realize," says Brown.
"They're just playing around and all of a suddenly they go over the slope and then they are caught by surprise and drown."
RCMP Cst. Kris Clark says the man appears to have been swimming prior to his death.
"There is nothing at this time to indicate that his death was suspicious," says Clark.
This is the third person found dead in Okanagan Lake since mid June.
The BC Coroners service is on the scene along with the RCMP.
The area has been secured.
