DKA Block Party a huge hit

The Downtown Kelowna Association's block party on Saturday was designed to make 'Bernard Avenue come alive,' and there's no doubt that happened after thousands of people attended the celebrations August 11.

The event has been held with a variety of themes in recent years including Mardi Gras and last year's Fusion Festival.

With the 18-month Bernard Avenue revitalization project set to begin later in the month, DKA Communications Manager Ryan Watters says the block party was vital to remind people the merchants along Bernard will continue to be open for business.

Those who attended were able to take advantage of special deals and sample a variety of food and drinks.

The City of Kelowna also took advantage of the opportunity to inform the public of Bernard Avenue's upcoming revitalization by setting up an information booth to answer people's questions.

The $11-million project will see the replacement of aging utilities and rejuvenate downtown’s main street.

The project will be delivered over two years with construction activity paused during July, August and December to accommodate peak revenue months for businesses. Completion is scheduled for summer 2014.
