Wood Lake victim identified

Kelowna RCMP have now identified the man who died Wednesday after falling through the ice on Wood Lake Wednesday morning.

Christopher Kent Stone, 46, of Lake Country, fell through the ice while riding his bicycle on the lake shortly after 10 a.m.

Following an intense day-long search by the Lake Country Fire Department Ice Rescue Team, Air 3 and RCMP dive team members, Stone's body was recovered about 4:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Stone apparently rode his bike onto the ice and spoke with several ice fisherman before going on his way.

Cst. Kris Clark says witnesses heard a loud crashing sound and saw the man go through the ice.

"He could be heard calling for help but no one was close enough to offer him assistance," says Clark.

It's unclear at this time where Stone was going at the time of the incident.

Clark says the BC Coroner Service will determine those details.

Police remind people never to walk on ice that is less than 10 cm (4 inches) thick and not to drive on ice that is less than 30 cm (12 inches) thick.

"When in doubt, don't do it," adds Clark.

"A cold water suit and safety vest are highly recommended."

Clark says people also need to be aware of ice near the inlet and outlet of streams.

"Always be extra cautious on river and stream ice. Ice can vary in thickness and strength from area to area because of temperature, water current, springs, snow cover and time of year."
