Wheelchair bound crash victim passes

Kelowna RCMP are confirming the man in a wheelchair who was struck crossing the intersection of Highway 97 and Cooper Road on Thursday January 19, has died.

Ryan Lanctot was preparing to cross the intersection just before 9 a.m. that day, when he became the victim of a chain reaction collision on icy roads.

According to one of the drivers, he was attempting to turn left from Harvey onto Cooper when a white van proceeded through the intersection striking his vehicle.

The chain reaction crash sent the truck turning left directly into Lanctot's path. He was transported, along with a another person, to Kelowna General hospital, eventually succumbing to his injuries.

In an email to Castanet and on Ryan's Facebook page, his brother Duane writes "It is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of my Brother Ryan, He succumbed to injuries from the accident last week. I will miss you little brother."

The RCMP says investigators still need to learn more to determine who's at fault.

"It's too early to say yet. The crash is still under investigation," says RCMP Cpl. Brenda Daly.

At this point, no charges have been laid.
