First Annual Garage Band Contest

Castanet is proud to officially introduce our first annual Garage Band Contest. Before we get into the contest rules, let’s go for the big reveal first.

The winning band will receive an amazing prize. We’re talking HUGE.

How huge? Like, your band will be going into a professional studio and have their own CD recorded, mixed and produced huge.

Rhythm Lab Studio is offering up their services to the winner, and between their great studio and professional staff, they’ll provide the winning band the royal treatment, with a package valued at anywhere between $3,500 and $5,000.

Not only that, but the winning band will get a guaranteed spot in one of this summer’s hottest music festivals - Islandia or Center of Gravity.

The band finishing in second place will also be taking home an excellent prize, a gift certificate of $500 to spend on gear and equipment with the fantastic people at Wentworth Music.

The third place-finishing band will receive a first-class professional photo shoot from Clear Images Photography.

Plus, all bands finishing in the Top 10 (as voted by our judges and our readers) will hit the studio at Rhythm lab and get a professional recording for a song of their choice.

Take a look at the rules, and when you’re ready, email us your songs (don’t be afraid to include bios and photos) at [email protected]

  • Send us your video links or mp3s and bios by Feb. 10, 2012
  • No age restrictions, all ages are welcome
  • Contest open to residents of the Okanagan only
  • Entry fee – there is none! Free!
  • Wide open to musical styles, all genres are accepted
  • Bonus points from the judges will be given to original material, but cover songs are ok and will likely make up the bulk of submissions
  • Songs can be submitted via mp3 or Youtube, but bands making the Top 10 will be invited to the Rhythm Lab studio to record their song for final judging
  • Sound quality is important – we need to hear vocals clearly, and recordings should be at a semi-pro level (ie. not a mic at the back of the room). Decent quality sound is key, and the great people at Rhythm Lab are willing to help anyone needing assistance.
  • We’re looking for raw talent; entrants mustn’t have won a contest or appeared on a compilation CD for at least 18 months
  • No guarantee of radio airplay
  • Submitted audio and/or video recordings will not be returned.
  • All bands agree to have their name, voice, and/or likenesses used in any advertising or broadcasting material relating to this contest without any compensation or rights to royalties for such use.
  • Rules are subject to change, and any changes will be posted on our special Garage Band Contest page

Top 5 Finalist Live Event:

  • Top 5 bands chosen will play a finalist concert at Sapphire Night Club
  • Bands must be prepared to play at least 3 songs in the concert if they're chosen in Top 5
  • Sapphire event will be 19+, but bands with underage members will be able to play on stage
  • Each band will have 15 minutes between acts to set up equipment and to sound check
  • Each band’s set must fill approximately 15 minutes but must not exceed 20 minutes. For every minute exceeding the 20-minute limit, the band will be penalized 5 points from their total score.
  • Wentworth Music and Sapphire night club will provide a P.A. system and drum kit. Participants must provide and transport their own equipment and be responsible for set-up and takedown. Castanet and all sponsors related to this competition are not responsible for lost or damaged equipment.
  • Any participant who appears to be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other controlled substance will result in immediate disqualification.
  • No karaoke tracks will be permitted. Fires, pyrotechnics, fog machines, etc. are not allowed.

For the live event, judging will be based on the following criteria:

Music (This criteria is based on clarity, lyrical content and overall musical performance)  1-10
Stage Presence and Crowd Interaction (How well the band "rocks out" and how well they connect with the crowd) 1-5
Appearance and Personality (Overall look and personality. If you want to be a rock star, you need to look the part!)  1-5
Originality (This criterion deals with the most important part of your act: how fresh your sound is! Bands want to show originality – even if you’re performing a cover song) in their performance to impress the judges)  1-10
Crowd Applause (The key ingredient to rock stardom: THE FANS!)  1-20
