Bike shop blackened by fire

A Mission area bicycle shop was the victim of a fire Friday night.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m., the Kelowna Fire Department responded to a report of smoke on the 2900 block of Pandosy.

When they arrived, firefighters found blackened windows, heavy smoke and heat from a fire that was burning inside Kelowna Cycle. The bike shop is part of a two storey multi unit commercial building.

To prevent the damage from spreading, three engines, a Rescue unit, Command Unit and 18 firefighters responded to the scene with assistance from the RCMP, ambulance and FortisBC.

Once on the scene, the fire was attacked on two fronts. They ventilated the heavy, thick smoke along with a direct interior attack which allowed crews to contain the fire to only the bike shop.

There were no occupants in the building at the time of the fire. During the battle, one fire fighter fell and had to be taken to hospital with a minor back injury.

Fire investigators were on the scene Saturday morning trying to determine the cause.

It's reported that much of the stock in the bike shop suffered damaged due to the extreme heat inside the building.
