Council hopeful runs for old logo

Shane Herrington feels strongly about Kelowna's image, strong enough to enter the race for City Council.

In announcing his candidacy Thursday, Harrington says he feels the citizen's voice needs to be returned to Kelowna City Council.

He outlined three points he feels would be a good start in returning a voice and accountability to the citizens of Kelowna.

  • A 0% tax increase in 2012
  • Return of the City Sails logo
  • Cedar Avenue Park designed with 100% green space

Harrington says he feels council dropped the ball by agreeing with staff recommendations to change the city logo to a 'nondescript series of spirals.'

He says staff also recommended selling off waterfront property purchased by the city for a park at Cedar Avenue.

Until the citizens came out in full force, Harrington says councillors were prepared to sell off park land which would be used by thousands of citizens in the South Pandosy area.

"I am extremely proud to call Kelowna home, but feel the current City Council has become indecisive and has stalled and overlooked several opportunities that could improve our city and save taxpayers money," says Harrington.

"It is time for the elected officials to represent the interests of Kelowna residents."

He adds the budgetary review by council showed a lack of financial expertise saying there were few relevant questions raised after staff presented the current budget.

Harrington, a professional engineer, is the Facility Manager at Kelowna General Hospital.

Council hopefuls have from October 4 to 14 to file nomination papers.
