Cyclists reminded to abide by rules

The start of April brings warmer weather, longer days and more cyclists and pedestrians enjoying Kelowna’s bike lanes and pathways.

With that in mind, cyclists are reminded to review the City of Kelowna’s Traffic Bylaws that pertain to cycling.

In particular, all riders are required to wear a bicycle helmet and cycling is not permitted on sidewalks.

Motorists are also asked to be aware and to share the road with cyclists. Parking or driving in bike lanes throughout Kelowna is not permitted and motorists should be mindful of these rules at all times.

"If everyone abides by the rules, it significantly reduces the risk of an accident," says Mike Kittmer, Active Transportation Coordinator.

"We're going to see more cyclists and more pedestrians as the city grows and everyone needs to be aware that being alert to motor, pedestrian and cycling traffic on the road is essential to safe travel."

The City of Kelowna has completed sweeping of all bike lanes and most roadways and the number of commuter and recreational cyclists is on the rise.

Bike lanes in Kelowna are swept 10 times a year. Kelowna has more than 260 kilometres of on-street bike lanes, more than 30 kilometres of hard surface shared-use pathways and many kilometres of gravel recreational pathways.

“For a city this size, Kelowna has one of the most extensive bike networks available,” says Jerry Dombowsky, Regional Programs Manager for the City of Kelowna. “We are committed to providing environmentally responsible modes of transportation that encourage healthier lifestyles.”
