CHBC News shakeup: Update

by - Story: 43087

Big shakeup at CHBC News.

The station's parent company, Can West Global, announced Wednesday that it's cutting five per-cent of its workforce in an attempt to reduce costs by $61 million.

More than 20 positions are being eliminated at CHBC including most of its production staff, the GM, and at least one on-air personality.

CHBC is getting rid of its noon newscast effective January 1, 2009. The noon anchor is Doris Janssen. The five-o'clock newscast will be broadcast out of Victoria and anchor Rick Webber has been offered the position, which he would share with co-anchor Klaudia Ceglarz.

CHBC is dropping sports as part of its programming in the new year, but long time sports anchor Pat Kennedy has been offered to stay on as a news reporter.

If Kennedy accepts the offer, he will bump a junior reporter.

It's not clear if the weather segment with Mike Roberts will be broadcast out of Kelowna, but Roberts' employment with CHBC is said to be secure.
