Two female hockey players at Lake Country’s Rink Hockey Academy recently captured gold at the IIHF U18 World Championships in Östersund, Sweden.
Gracie Graham and Maya Serdachny, both 17, were a part of the Team Canada that took down home team Sweden 10 - 0 in the gold medal game on Jan. 15.
“I feel like it was one of the best hockey experiences I’ve had so far in my hockey career. It’s always been a dream of mine to wear the Canadian jersey, and to have the opportunity to win a gold medal with that jersey on, it’s an experience of a lifetime,” said Graham.
Teammates and close friends, the two left-side blueliners were paired together on the same line for Team Canada — the chemistry was instant.
“I always know where she is on the ice, that’s one of the things on how we work so good together. We know where each other are, and where to pass and where not to," said Serdachny.
"When she would rush, I would stay back and support her. If I were to rush, she would always be there too. So, we just took turns and helped each other out to create offence and defence.”
Their coach believes their world stage experience will do wonders not only for them, but for their whole team.
"For their games it’s a huge boost, but I think for us as well, them coming back into the lineup to be able to teach some things they learned as well. We have a lot of grade 10s in our lineup that will be going through that process," explained Rink Hockey Academy head coach Chris Hogg.
"For those two girls being and living in B.C., it’s good for young girls that go through it, and for us to continue to try and help the next generation.”
Graham will have another chance to represent Team Canada at the World Championships next year, but for Serdachny, she will have aged out. She is heading to the University of Connecticut to continue her hockey career.
As for the Rink Hockey Academy U18 women's team that the pair play on, they currently sit alone at the top the league standings with an impressive record of 22-0-1.
