RCMP respond to mental-health related double axe incident

Axe wielding man arrested

Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of an axe-wielding man in the 300-block area of Academy Way on Tuesday.

The UBCO Phoenix tweeted an alert just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday notifying students and staff that there was, "a man wielding an axe. He is stopping traffic and screaming at nearby vehicles and people. Stay safe and spread the word."

RCMP tell Castanet they responded to a call at 4 p.m., "when officers arrived on scene, they located a man associated to a residence nearby who was in possession of two axes," Cpl. Tammy Lobb, RCMP media relations officer says.

Lobb says the incident was mental health-related and that their investigation determined, "the man had not threatened or injured anyone with the axe. He was subsequently arrested on a warrant out of Vernon."

"Police seized the axes in relation to public safety but no criminal charges are pursued," said Lobb.
