Drug Dealer Round Up

by - Story: 30526

Kelowna RCMP have taken more than a half-dozen alleged crack dealers off the streets and are looking for more.

A total of 18 people are facing drug charges following a three day undercover operation in late May.

Police say they brought in 'specialized RCMP undercover operators' to the city who made 23 crack cocaine purchases. Most of the deals were done in the area of Richter and Lawrence -- just outside the red-zone. That red-zone is being expanded to Ethel Street.

"In some cases, the same individual sold drugs to the undercover operators two or three times," says Sergeant Tim Shields. "In other cases, two people were charged for the same transaction because one person known as the 'middler' would take the undercover operator to the seller and would receive a commission in the form of a small shaving of crack rock."

Shields says the amounts purchased ranged from .08 to .28 grams, costing between $20 to $80.

RCMP say it's the second street level drug operation so far this year and Superintendent Bill McKinnon says there will be more.

"These undercover projects will be ongoing and will be run at anytime without notice. Drug traffickers are not welcome in Kelowna and we will do whatever is legal and ethical to take them off our streets. Drug trafficking, whether in the downtown core or in residential neighbourhoods, reduces our quality of life and is and will continue to be a priority for Kelowna Detachment."

The 18 people facing charges include five females. Seven of the suspects are in custody and police are looking for the remaining 11. Police say three of the 18 have been charged in previous undercover operations in Kelowna.

RCMP have taken the unusual step of releasing photos of the wanted suspects.
