Kelowna Right to Life Society met with counter protest at UBCO

Dueling abortion protests

An anti-abortion protest at UBC Okanagan, Tuesday, was met with a counter protest by university students.

The Kelowna Right to Life Society was opposed by students from the UBC Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO), Sexual Assault and Rape Awareness (S.A.R.A.) and the UBCSUO Sex Positivity Club.

"We just wanted to establish a presence that counters the negative messaging ... and show some solidarity for all the people that want to feel confident that their choice is protected," said student Robin Metcalfd.

Student signs included: "Sugar spice and reproductive rights" ... "Women die when abortion isn't accessible," and "It's time to stop being quiet, abortion isn't a dirty little secret, it's a valid medical procedure and no woman deserves vilification for having one."

The Right to Life group remained on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., displaying graphic photographs of aborted fetuses.

"We just hope that most students who may have never thought of abortion or seen abortion in this way will have a new understanding of the reality of it," said executive director Marlon Bartram.

"We believe there's a better answer than decapitating, disemboweling and dismembering a small child to try and solve life's difficult problems."
