Weather well below average, says Environment Canada

Sub-zero temps hours away

Sub-zero temperatures are expected in the Okanagan tonight and Wednesday, with frost potentially into Thursday morning as a result of the cold front that arrived in the valley Monday.

Kelowna's high will be just 5 or 6 C on Wednesday. This is eight degrees below average, says Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist. However, it's also not record-breaking.

Overnight temps are forecast to dip to -3 C tonight and Wednesday, and climb to zero on Thursday.

"The record for tonight (Oct. 8) is four degrees below zero, so we probably won't have a record broken tonight, but it will be close, and very cold," said Lundquist.

"Then we'll have gradual warming towards the weekend as we get back towards the average temperature for this time of year."

Lundquist says the main impact will be on gardens, harvesting, vehicles and buildings as the colder temperatures set in.

He suggests residents start thinking of what needs to be winterized, and also consider bringing pets inside.
