Motionball returns to town

After raising a record-breaking $125,000 for Special Olympics last year, Motionball is back in Kelowna this weekend.

The annual local Marathon of Sport fundraising event takes place in City Park Saturday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Participants will play a number of different sports throughout the day, including volleyball, basketball, soccer, ultimate, flag football and more.

“This event is all about levelling the playing field and making sure everyone feels included as a part of the team,” said event director Derek Fuhr.

“There are still many misconceptions around intellectual disabilities. We want to reduce stigma and make it possible for more individuals to join the Special Olympics movement.”

The event, which sees local participants playing with Special Olympic athletes, raises funds for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

Similar events are held all over Canada.

One local participant is looking to raise $10,000 for the event all by himself. If he's successful, he'll mark the accomplishment on his body permanently.
