Recovering after hit and run

A 20-year-old man is recovering from serious injuries in hospital after he was struck by a vehicle and thrown into the air on Bernard Avenue near Lakeview Street Saturday night.

Just before 7 p.m., the pedestrian was hit by a Ford sedan, but the driver didn't stop, and left the scene.

Several bystanders helped the injured man, who was lying motionless in the street. One witness said several people were “hysterical” after witnessing the horrific crash.

“It was heartening to see countless bystanders stop to provide assistance and comfort to the pedestrian who lay injured in the roadway,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP.

While the driver of the Ford sedan fled the scene, he was later found by police on Westside Road and arrested.

“We would like to extend our appreciation to the astute members of the motoring public who spotted our notably damaged suspect vehicle, headed towards the William R. Bennett bridge,” Cpl. O’Donaghey said.

Police are investigating the 23-year-old suspect for impaired driving, and he faces several potential charges.

“We are now encouraging anyone who witnessed the collision unfold to contact police immediately with your information,” Cpl. O'Donaghey said.

“Furthermore, if any motorist has any dash camera footage of the event, they are urged to contact the Kelowna RCMP immediately.”
