Student protest warning

A planned protest against climate change in Kelowna has prompted a letter home to parents from Supt. of Central Okanagan Schools Kevin Kaardal.

The Kelowna Youth Climate Strike Team has organized a protest for 1 p.m. today at Kerry Park. The organizers are asking youths, including elementary and high school aged students, to leave school and take part in the protest.

The letter indicates "the district supports the rights that citizens of the age of majority have in a democratic society to freely assemble."

However, the letter goes on to state, "the proposed strike raises a number of concerns, particularly with regard to student safety and the loss of instructional time."

Kaardal encourages parents who are giving their children permission to attend the event to call their child's school and excuse the absence.

The letter also encourages parents to speak to their children about the issue of climate change and encourage them to make "good choices about their safety and education."
