Cops swarm, gunfire heard

UPDATE: 4:35 p.m.

Police in tactical gear are still inside an upper floor unit at Bernard Avenue and D'Anjou Street.

The scene is a block up Bernard from Nester's Market, in the Fairlane Court complex.

Residents say they saw a man and two women being arrested.

Some officers are starting to leave the scene now.


UPDATE: 4:25 p.m.

A witness in an apartment building across the street from The Centuria on Bernard Avenue says he saw police guiding an individual into a police vehicle in the building's parking lot.

RCMP and members of the Emergency Response Team were at the scene, some with guns drawn.


UPDATE: 4:20 p.m.

Police are focusing their attention on a building near Nester's Market, not far from the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Gordon Drive.

"Police were yelling at us to drive faster past the duplex," says one motorist. "It was a couple streets up from Nester's.

"We saw three police officers in green with huge guns drawn (go) into the second floor of the complex, and as we drove past we heard what was believed to be gunshots."

Residents report hearing gunfire on Bernard Avenue as a police tactical team stormed the area.


ORIGINAL: 3:50 p.m.

Police officers are scouring downtown Kelowna in what appears to be an active situation.

A line of seven undercover police vehicles was seen zooming south on Highway 97 towards Kelowna at 1:30 p.m.

Cruisers are stationed at multiple locations downtown, including near Lawrence Avenue and Ethel Street and near Bernard Avenue and Gordon Drive.

Castanet has learned police are looking for someone, but no further details have been provided.

“I can confirm that RCMP are in the area conducting an investigation,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. 

Residents in Vernon said they saw a similar trail of undercover police vehicles rushing towards Kelowna, but it is not confirmed if they are related to this incident or to one earlier today in Kamloops
