YLW makes sense for Swoop

UPDATE: 4:48 p.m.

Kelowna International Airport recently became the 10th busiest in the nation, so it was only a matter of time before Swoop swooped in and started flying out of YLW.

Swoop, which is WestJet’s ultra-low-cost carrier, announced Tuesday that it will provide non-stop service to Winnipeg’s Richardson International Airport three times a week beginning May 24.

“Kelowna is very popular, even for a secondary airport,” Swoop spokesperson Karen McIsaac said Tuesday afternoon. “Partially because in the summer the Okanagan Valley is a highly popular tourist destination. The Kelowna airport has been wonderful partners for WestJet, our parent company, for many, many years. So it naturally made sense for us to take a look at Kelowna.”

The flights to and from the Manitoba capital are scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays and Mondays. They will continue until Oct. 25.
