Flames 'smelled like plastic'

Chelsea Powrie

UPDATE: 8:50 p.m.

A witness who lives up the hill from the structure fire that ignited in Peachland Friday night says flames have receded but numerous emergency vehicles are still visible on scene.

Anne Bauer said she heard and smelled the blaze before she saw it.

"We were sitting in the living room and heard this big 'pop, pop, pop,'" Bauer said. "We thought it was coming from our home but then we looked out and saw it's a fire down by the highway."

She said they watched plumes of black smoke climb up the hillside, and listened to intermittent explosions as a swarm of emergency vehicles arrived with lights flashing and sirens blaring.

"It was, you know that smell of burning plastic? It was like that," Bauer said.

Castanet has reached out to authorities for comment and is awaiting response.
