$10K for new music video

A local band has a cool $10,000 to make their next music video and highlight other local musicians in the process.

Ancient Engines' last music video garnered loads of attention with its light-hearted Canadian themes, and they're looking to repeat that success with their new one.

This past weekend, the band learned they had been chosen as one of the winners of the Telus Storyhive music video contest.

After submitting pitches, 40 bands from across Canada were handed $10,000 each to make their project a reality.

With the help of local filmmaker Chelsea McEvoy, who directed and produced their last video, the band is hoping to highlight the Kelowna music scene, along with local musicians' day jobs, in the video for their song Two Hands Less.

“Outside of doing this music full time, we actually have to have full-time jobs and live in the real world,” said bassist Torrey Woody, who also manages Metro Liquor in West Kelowna. “It won't just be us, the band, it'll be a lot of the other musicians around town from other local acts.

In addition to a liquor store manager, Ancient Engines also consists of a cabinet maker, a security system installer and a chef, all of which will be showcased in the new music video.

“We'll go to their jobs and show what they're doing, and then show them playing at sets, and then do the same with us, but try and get a whole bunch of people involved.”

He says with the $10,000 grant, they plan to spend quite a bit of time making the upcoming video, but they hope to release it by next spring.

Woody says they try and keep close to as many other local bands as they can, and the Kelowna music scene is quite supportive of each other.

“We just had a show last weekend and a whole bunch of other bands showed up, like Lucky Monkey,” Woody said. “We're good friends with those guys.”

Ancient Engines next show will be Dec. 2 at West Kelowna's Whiskey Jacks Pub and Grill, followed by a Christmas show with several other bands in late December at Fernandos Pub in downtown Kelowna.
