A medal for your efforts

Two Central Okanagan residents are among 40 British Columbians who will receive the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers.

Jeannette Mergens will receive the honour for her commitment to improving child care and to reducing poverty and homelessness. She has been a representative of Community Action Towards Children's Health and a member of the B.C. Poverty Reduction Coalition.

She has also been involved in the Child Poverty campaign and the Aging Out Of Foster Care project.

Garth Vickers is celebrated for his ability to bring out the best in athletes.

Vickers has demonstrated outstanding leadership as coach at all competitive levels with Special Olympics for nearly two decades.

The Sovereign's Medal recognizes volunteer achievements in a wide range of fields across the country.

Lieut.-Gov. Janet Austin will present the medals Thursday at Government House in Victoria.
