Alleged pimp's trial delayed

The trial for an alleged Kelowna pimp has been pushed back more than five months after he found a new lawyer.

Simon Rypiak was arrested in August 2016, the culmination of an 11-month police investigation across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

The 34-year-old, who went by the name of Simon Ross, is facing 14 charges, including sexual assault, procuring sexual services of a person under 18, assault causing bodily harm and benefiting from sexual services.

He's accused of recruiting girls between the ages of 15 and 20 across Canada to work in his Kelowna-based escort business using social media.

Upon his arrest, police said they believed Rypiak “used physical violence to maintain control of his victims,” and nine alleged victims had been identified by police.

At the time, police reached out to the public to find additional victims, but it's unclear if more were found.

In January, Rypiak's three-week trial was scheduled to begin Oct. 22, 2018, but on Monday the date was pushed back to April 8, 2019.

“The trial was adjourned at the request of the accused to accommodate new counsel,” explained Dan McLoughlin, communications counsel with the BC Prosecution Service.
