Accused killer in court

The man accused of killing his wife and setting fire to their home while her body lay inside appeared in Kelowna court this week.

Kevin Costin was arrested and charged in the murder last May, a year and a half after the body of 37-year-old Hazel Budiongan was found inside her home on Boucherie Road.

The West Kelowna Fire Department responded to the house fire just before 2 a.m. on Nov. 4, 2015 and Budiongan's body was found inside.

The couple had married just months prior to Budiongan's death.

A preliminary inquiry for Costin began in Kelowna court last week, and it's expected to wrap up Thursday. A preliminary inquiry is held to determine if the Crown has sufficient evidence to proceed to a Supreme Court trial.

The court will hear the Crown's case in full, including testimony from witnesses, but the proceedings are covered under a publication ban.

In addition to the murder, Costin is also facing charges of arson causing damage to a property and interference with a dead body.

Budiongan was originally from the Philippines. She reportedly sent money she earned in Kelowna back to her mother and young son in the Philippines.
