Hot temps, hot demand

Madison Erhardt

Hot, dry temperatures in the Okanagan are causing more than a sunburn.

WorkSafe BC is warning outdoor workers of the risk of heat stress as temperatures soar into the 30s.

Landscapers, construction and forestry workers are particularly at risk.

Meanwhile, BC Hydro predicts electricity demand could exceed historical records for June as the summer's first heat wave sweeps the province.

On Monday, the utility recorded its highest peak hourly demand of the season. At close to 7,300 megawatts, it was a more than a 10 per cent increase over the previous Monday.

Enviornment Canada says the intense heat will increase wildfire danger, especially with thunder and lighting in the forecast.

"We had such a dry May that even with a couple weeks of near normal conditions in the first half of June and then right back into this very strong ride of high pressure, those are all the antecedent conditions you don't want to see before wildfIre season," said spokesperson Armel Castellan.

Wildfire danger ratings across B.C. are currently moderate to high in most regions, with pockets of extreme danger, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service. The lone exceptions are the far southeast of the province, Haida Gwaii and northern Vancouver Island, where the rating is low.
