Lose weight for science

UPDATE: 4 p.m.

The UBC research team tells us the weight-loss study now has a full complement of participants.

ORIGINAL: 10:15 a.m.

A research project at UBC Okanagan and in Vancouver has partnered with international weight-loss company Weight Watchers – and is looking for participants.

Got a few pounds to lose? You can take part in the free 12-month weight-loss trial.

Associate Professor of psychology Lesley Lutes has been awarded $1.7 million to study Weight Watchers' new Freestyle program across three countries, Canada, the United States, and the U.K.

In Canada, 120 men and women will be recruited from the Okanagan and Vancouver. All participants will also receive compensation after completing baseline, three-month, and 12-month measures.

“The rates of obesity in Canada are relentlessly rising,” says Lutes. “Despite efforts to slow this trend, currently two thirds of Canadians are overweight or obese.”

Six in 10 Canadians are currently overweight or obese.

The controlled trial will compare physiological and psychosocial health outcomes related to Weight Watchers Freestyle and a “do-it-yourself” approach. Applicants will be randomly placed into either group, and all participants will receive a free year of Weight Watchers programming.
