Inside an emergency kit

Madison Erhardt

Emergencies have a habit of happening at inconvenient times.

That's why a Kelowna business says taking a few minutes to prepare could save your life.

Floods and forest fires across the B.C. Interior force people to leave their homes at a moment's notice every year. If you had to leave, would you be ready?

Brian Doubt of Sergeant Preppers Army Surplus tells us what goes into an emergency preparedness.

"The basics most people should have are food and water. I would also say a water filter system. Whatever food you would normally eat is a good idea. I also sell MREs, which are (military) meals ready to eat," said Doubt.

He says a first aid kit, flashlight and a small portable stove are also great to have when disaster strikes.

"The biggest mistake when making sure you are prepared for an emergency is people often aren't prepared to be gone long enough. They also forget about the things that are very valuable, like photographs and family heirlooms," Doubt added.
