Economic indicators strong

More people were working, homes cost significantly more, and far fewer new homes were built in the first part of 2018.

The Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission says the region's economy was mostly strong in the first quarter of the year. Its latest economic indicators report shows approximately 100,000 people in the region were working, marking a 1.7 per cent increase in the labour force.

That slight bump meant the region’s unemployment rate dropped as well, to 6.1 per cent, compared to 7.1 in the first quarter of 2017.

The report also shows a 58.1 per cent jump in job postings. The 5,871 jobs advertised during the period support the growth in the region’s labour force, the commission says, with the highest demand continuing to be in the sales and service category.
