Repair Cafe can fix it

Spring cleaning goes to a new level this weekend at Okanagan College.

This Saturday you can, Get Stuff Fixed at Repair Café!

If you have stuff around the house in need of repair, but you’re not the right person to fix it, bring it to the Repair Café at Okanagan College.

The event is hosted by the Regional Waste Reduction Office and takes place at Okanagan College Trades Building - 1000 KLO Road, Saturday, April 28th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“In a nutshell, don’t toss it, repair it. It’s a recyclers dream. These Repair Cafés are also about reviving the whole culture of repair, to get people thinking well maybe I can use this thing again, about changing our habits from a throwaway to a fix it society. Recover, Reinvent, Rethink, Responsibility.” Waste Reduction Facilitator Rae Stewart says the idea behind the Repair Café is to stop things from landing in the garbage unnecessarily.

“No job is too big or too small for our thirty plus fixers, if you can carry it in under your arm, our volunteers will take a crack at it. We build these events around the volunteers available to us, so the items that are up for fixing are determined by who is on site on event day. Oftentimes, just by troubleshooting with a volunteer fixer, you may also come away with a new skill you’ve picked up by watching and learning how to fix. So empowerment is also a nice piece of the puzzle.”

If you're handy, consider volunteering as a Repair Café Fixer.
