More natural gas lines are being struck in British Columbia, and Kelowna is among the worst offenders.
According to FortisBC, which supplies natural gas to a large swath of the province, Kelowna has had one of the highest rates of gas line damage per capita in the province during the past few years.
In 2017, the company recorded 66 hits to natural gas lines in the city. That’s 16 per cent more than in 2016, when there was 57.
“Kelowna is one of the cities that are the highest hits per capita, so it’s definitely a hot zone,” says Fortis spokesperson Diana Sorace.
She says the high numbers can be attributed to “a couple of things,” most notably the significant construction happening in the city, and that contractors are the main culprits.
