Training future firefighters

Madison Erhardt

A group of 75 students across the Okanagan took part in a firefighter bootcamp Wednesday.

Students in Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 were put through the trenches at Fire Hall One on Enterprise Way. The group rotated through five stations and participated in ladder climbing, hose carrying, fire extinguishing and much more.

"This is our third year in a row with students from School District 23," said Rick Euper, fire and life safety educator.

"It gives them a chance to learn about the fire service. It's also for recruitment. As they get older we would like them if they are interested in the service and when openings come up."

Although not every student is interested in becoming a firefighter, those at Wednesday's event agreed it was better than sitting in class.

"This is great. I like helping people and I love this action," said Jared Pimiskern, a Grade 11 student.

Students throughout the Okanagan will continue to explore a number of different career options all week.
