Crews are working rapidly to divert rushing water away from homes already flooded and prepare for more rain this week.
Residents living on Verde Vista Road at Kirschner Mountain found their basements flooded Thursday night and since then have been desperately trying to stop the flow of water.
Runoff water is flowing into their backyards from the top of the mountain where developers have cut down numerous trees and changed the geography of the land. Water is also seeping in underneath the homes.
The developer and city crews have had machines running all day Monday and Tuesday, according to James Kay development engineering manager with the City of Kelowna.
“Contractors have been up there diverting the water, they’ve been pumping the water away, they’ve been trucking it away and so they are working to immediately resolve the surface water issue,” he said.
Kay said the developer does have a responsibility to make sure there is no increase in storm water runoff into neighbouring properties.
The two residents impacted by the runoff flood water said they have been living at their homes for almost 30 years and never experienced flooding before.
Resident Harry Rasmussen said he believes the flood is “because the development behind us, the land change that they have done, removing the forest, building up the land up there.”
Kay said the city was surprised to hear about the flooding caused by the developers.
“We were surprised to see this, but they responded immediately, they are working to fix it and we are trying to make sure, before the rain later this week, that they are protected,” he said.
According to Kay, there is no storm sewer on the road.
“It has to go somewhere and in the long term we need something that is reliable and dependable,” he said.
Rain is expected for Kelowna Thursday and crews are hoping their quick work will hold off the water from rushing down to the homes.
Donna Greer who lives at one of the flooded homes said the flow of water has decreased since their work, but they have not had any indication from city staff about a solution.
