Can't remember stabbing

The day after Waylon Jackson was stabbed to death in his Rutland home, Chad Alphonse told an interrogating officer he knew he did it, but couldn't remember stabbing Jackson.

The video of Const. Steve McBride's interrogation of Alphonse on March 12, 2016, was played to the jury at Alphonse's second-degree murder trial, Thursday.

Alphonse is accused of of stabbing Jackson three times, once through the heart and lung, during an evening of drinking that ended in a fight.

Alphonse is dating Phillisede Foureyes, the sister of Jackson's common-law spouse, and during the interrogation, Alphonse told Const. McBride that Jackson was “like a brother” to him.

“We were all having a great time ... we were all laughing and joking around and everything,” Alphonse said. “And this happened, like, I don't even f**king remember, it's all blurred.”

Alphonse told Const. McBride he had blacked out from drinking when Jackson was stabbed.

“You seem to remember a lot of the events before this happened, and then you don't remember and then all of sudden you remember a lot again,” Const. McBride said during the interrogation. “It seems convenient that you'd forget that part.”

Alphonse said he wasn't hiding anything, and reiterated that the events were “all a blur.”

McBride told Alphonse about the evidence police had, including witness accounts of the stabbing and the bloody knife found in Alphonse's pocket.

"I don't even know what to think right now," he said. "I wouldn't even do this ... I know that I did, but this isn't me."

At one point during the interrogation, McBride played Phillisede's 911 phone call, where the words, “he's dying, he's dying,” could be heard through her panicked, unintelligible screaming.

“I don't even know what to say,” Alphonse says in response. “I can't even still believe it that I even did that while I was blacked out.”

Throughout the interrogation, McBride says he thinks Alphonse remembers more than he's letting on.

Twice, Alphonse says he should consult his lawyer.

The trial is scheduled to continue through next week.
