No anger before stabbing

A woman who was helping decorate for a baby shower the night the new mother's spouse was stabbed to death told the court Thursday there had been no arguments or anger at the house prior to the killing.

Chad Alphonse is accused of stabbing Waylon Jackson three times on the evening of March 11, 2016, killing him.

At the time, Alphonse was dating the sister of Naomi Foureyes, Jackson's common-law spouse and the mother of his child.

Kelsey Watts was at Jackson's and Foureyes' home on the night of the killing, at 115 Gerstmar Road. They were decorating for Foureyes' baby shower the next day, and Foureyes' five-week-old daughter and four-year-old son were in the house as well.

On Thursday, Watts testified there was no yelling or anger at the house while they were there, but some of them had been drinking alcohol.

“It was all fine or whatever, everyone was fine,” Watts said. “There were jokes that were funny to some and not funny to others.”

When Crown prosecutor David Grabavac asked her to clarify what she meant, Watts said: “Chad was joking or he said a joke about somebody or to somebody, to one of the guys. I don't know exactly which one.”

She said she believes she got home around 8:30 p.m., and doesn't believe anyone was drunk when she left.

At 9:50 p.m., police responded to reports of a stabbing at the house. Jackson was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m. at the Kelowna General Hospital.

The Crown believes Alphonse stabbed Jackson after the two had gotten in a fight that evening. Police found Alphonse shortly after responding to the scene two blocks away, a bloody knife in his pants pocket.

The blood on the knife matched the DNA of Jackson.

The trial is scheduled until March 23.
