Brutal past, shares story

Contributed

When he was 15-years-old, Sean McCann was sexually assaulted by his priest.

McCann, best known as former singer of Great Big Sea, turned to alcohol to battle with the betrayal and trauma he saw at such an early age.

For 35 years he turned to the bottle to numb his pain.

In 2013, he made the decision to leave Great big Sea and reinvent his life.

Now, six years sober, he is touring as both a solo artist and mental health advocate sharing his story.

On March 5, McCann will be in Kelowna to perform in a fundraiser like no other.

The event is titled 'Help Your Self'' and will feature an evening of songs and stories with McCann.

The money raised will go towards Ozanam Recovery House, a not-for-profit facility that provides a safe home for disadvantaged men in Kelowna, whether impoverished, affected by either mental or physical illness or drug and alcohol addictions.
