Revitalizing our forests

Madison Erhardt

NDP cabinet ministers are putting the full court press on the Central Okanagan leading up to next week's Kelowna West byelection.

Premier John Horgan was here to announce a new school in Lake Country, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, Melanie Mark, made funding announcements on Thursday, and Minister of Forests, Doug Donaldson, attended a forestry conference Thursday.

Donaldson stopped by the Coast Capri hotel during the Western Forestry Contractors' Association conference and addressed topics including softwood lumber, trade, the Okanagan watershed, and wildfire mitigation.

Donaldson was scheduled to speak Thursday night, and said he'd be thanking industry leaders.

"They have done a lot of work, and they are the meat and bones of what goes on in the forest sector on the ground," he said.

"We will be talking about forest revitalization. Part of my mandate letter from the Premier was around planting more trees, silvicultural activities, and this is the kind of important job that people I'm talking to."
