Grandparents wanted

A Kelowna pilot project is looking to pair university and college students with seniors.

The iGen project will help students find cheaper accommodations and seniors feel less isolated, and you can apply now. "We want 55-plus seniors who are living unassisted, and have professional work experience," said Happipad founder Cailan Libby.

Students and seniors will be screened for compatibility, similar backgrounds, and criminal record checks to take part in the iGen project.

"The students get the benefit of mentorship and rents 50 to 80 per cent (of) the going rate. For seniors, they get companionship, rental income and both are expected to share household chores and cooking," added Libby.

"Lots of students come here from other areas, and this is an opportunity to have the grandparent experience and be part of a family."

A detailed application is required, followed by interviews and a meeting between the "roommates."

There are also guidelines for resolving disputes and any issues that might arise.

Applications are being taken until March 26, with the project launching May 1. For information on how to apply to iGen click here.
