Bouncer on trial for assault

A bouncer at Kelowna's Liquid Zoo is in court this week for an alleged assault against a patron.

Jonathan Bruce is facing an aggravated assault charge in Kelowna Supreme Court this week for a Nov. 22, 2015 incident that left Rhett Miller with major head trauma that still leaves him with headaches more than two years later.

Miller arrived at the Liquid Zoo on the evening in question with several of his friends, after previously attending a hockey game.

Video surveillance from inside the bar that night showed Miller and Bruce having what appears to be friendly conversation.

Miller testified Tuesday that he and Bruce had had a congenial relationship for some time, and the two would regularly chat when Miller would attend the bar.

Just after midnight on Nov. 22, Miller appears to have a conversation with another employee of the bar, before Bruce comes over, and the two men leave towards the back door.

Once outside, surveillance footage shows Bruce hit Miller with a single strike, dropping him to the pavement.

Due to the brain injury he received, Miller has no recollection of being at the bar, including what led to the strike.

Miller was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Bruce attended the hospital that night and spoke with Miller's wife.

Amber Miller testified Bruce had told her the injury was his fault, and he had “slapped” her husband after Miller had “raised his hand” to Bruce. She said Bruce appeared genuinely concerned.

Video surveillance from that night shows Miller and Bruce leaving through the back door of the bar, but there are a few seconds as they go from inside to outside, just before Miller is hit, that wasn't caught on camera.

Amber Miller said the first month after the incident was "horrible," due to the pain her husband went through. Rhett Miller said he wasn't cleared to go back to work until seven months later.

The jury trial is expected to conclude this week.
